I’m a Breakfast and Morning Person

When I say I’m a breakfast person, it means I like to eat traditional breakfast food. I can eat that type of food at any time of the day, but I prefer eating it in the morning. I’m also a morning person, unlike a lot of other people I know. Even though I can cook for myself, I prefer not to. My wife, Josie, cooks for me, but not every day and not for every meal.
Breakfast Foods
As an American descended from at least four generations of Americans, there are certain kinds of food I like to eat. There are many I won’t eat at all. I like eggs, ham, sausage, bacon, hash browns and toast, but that’s only the short list. When I want something light, I’ll eat oatmeal or cold cereal.
When breakfast is cooked, Josie does the cooking. Even though she’s Filipino, she cooks American food better than most Americans. I’m very picky and she knows it. Fried eggs, for example, have to be fully cooked. We sometimes eat pancakes, but not often at all. The syrup is too sweet. We don’t make waffles while we’re in the Philippines, and we don’t buy them from any store.
Burritos and Sandwiches
Josie creates breakfast burritos using flour tortillas, scrambled eggs, potatoes, cheddar cheese and two or more forms of meat. She’ll use bacon if we have it. We usually buy some other luncheon meat instead of SPAM, and she’ll use that if we have it. She’ll make enough of the burritos to last me for three or four days. All I have to do is heat them up in the microwave oven. I’ll sometimes dip them in salsa, but it isn’t necessary.
Josie worked at a couple of fast-food places after she first went to the United States, nearly 40 years ago. Not for very long each time, but long enough to know how everything was prepared. The Egg McMuffin comes with Canadian bacon, a fried egg and an American cheese slice on an English muffin. She copies the Sausage and Egg McMuffin version of it because sausage seems “meatier” than Canadian bacon or ham slices.
The Breakfast Jack consists of an egg, a ham slice and an American cheese slice on a hamburger bun. Josie makes an almost exact copy. There are times when she goes to the public market area early in the morning to get fresh food, and she’ll sometimes get me a couple of Sausage and Egg McMuffins and hash browns at the nearest McDonald’s. It doesn’t happen often, and I’m okay with that.
Breakfast Places in the United States
My younger son, Jon, is also a breakfast person. When we’re staying with him, I can expect to be sitting inside an IHOP or a Golden Corral at least once or twice per stay. As far as I know, neither of those restaurant chains have made it to the Philippines. There are other breakfast places, but I can’t remember their names. They’re not nationwide franchises.
There are a lot of retired Americans living in one of the barangays of Olongapo City. There are at least two restaurants in that area that cater to them. I’ve only been to one of them, but not recently. I’m not fond of going out specifically to eat. It has to be in conjunction with going out for another reason.
