Mead is an Alcoholic Beverage Made With Honey

My younger son, Jon, is fascinated with mead. I blame it on the video games he plays that simulate the medieval period of history. He’s had quite a few bottles of it, and none of it’s been really strong.
If you don’t know what mead is, I suggest you take a few minutes to read the Wikipedia page on it. It’s interesting, if you’re into that kind of thing.
A Mead Obsession
Jon bought his first three bottles of mead from a place called “Manoa Honey & Mead” in Wahiawa on the island of Oahu in Hawaii in 2020. I tasted one of them (less than a shot). It was fruity and that’s about all I can say about it.
The first time he went to our older son’s house in Maryland while on leave from the Army, he bought a single bottle of mead from a nearby liquor store. It was a little larger than those he had before, and it was the last bottle on the shelf. It was stronger than what he had before, but not very much. He ordered another bottle from somewhere else while he was there, and he made sure to drink it before he left.
The second time he was in Maryland, he went with everyone else to the Maryland Renaissance Festival. He bought a glass of mead, and I took a sip of it. It tasted almost the same as the bottle he bought from the liquor store. Neither of them were strong. Wine tends to be stronger. I even drove him to a place that sold more than one variety, about a half an hour away. He wasted no time finishing the bottles he bought when we got back home.
His Favorite Alcoholic Beverage
Jon’s in his thirties, so I can’t say it’s just a phase he’s going through. Perhaps he’ll tire of it, or perhaps he won’t. As long as his wife, Cathy, is willing to put up with it, there really isn’t anything I can say about it.
I’ve tried various liquor and liqueur beverages over the years as highballs (mixed drinks), on ice, and even straight. I prefer whisky on ice. Mead reminds me too much of wine, which I really don’t care for. As far as alcoholic beverages go, I avoid them as nothing more than a waste of time.
Jon likes to drink dark beer, and he likes to drink vodka. When he starts craving mead, he cares for neither of them. Usually, it’s something he thinks about after playing video games for hours. He can find all the mead he wants where he’s stationed now for at least another year. One of the “shoppettes” on the base carries all kinds of mead.
