Blogging For As Long As I'm Able

A New Beginning For My Personal Blog

Tagged with blogging, computer monitors, resolution on December 1, 2023

blog I have restarted my personal blog so many times, I’ve lost count. Hopefully, this will be the last time. I no longer have any excuses because hosting my personal blog no longer costs me anything. The only thing I have to pay for, once a year, is my domain name.

I started blogging in 2006, shortly after arriving in the Philippines. Although I never considered myself very good at it, I used to make money. I never really cared about that aspect of it because it was a hobby, like any other, designed to replace idle time.

When I’m not blogging, I’m bored out of my mind most of the time. There are only so many things I can read or watch. I don’t play video games and I don’t socialize much. Not even online.

Even my wife, Josie, wants me to continue blogging. I can be a real pain when I’m bored, and she needs her space as much as I need mine. We’ve been together for a very long time, and that wouldn’t have been possible without boundaries.

My Blogging Platform

In the past, I used the self-hosted version of WordPress and static-site generators. I turned WordPress itself into a static-site generator at one time. Today, I’m using a homegrown static-site generator. I have Nginx and PHP on my laptop computer, and I do all of my own coding and design work with a plain text editor. Other than normalize.css and some suggestions by Matthew James Taylor, that is.

The most common computer monitor resolution is 1920x1080 (called 1080p, Full HD, or FHD). Setting the content to display a maximum width of 1536 pixels allows for sufficient “white space” on both sides. It’s responsive, so I can actually use any width less than 1920 pixels.

There’s No Need to Be Prolific

For years, I felt like I had to write often, probably for the advertising revenue. All it did was make me sloppy and write about things that weren’t important to me. I don’t want to get into that mindset again. It’s a much better idea to take my time and make sure it’s something I really want to write about, and it’s something that might be interesting to someone other than me. It shouldn’t matter how long it takes. And it won’t take as long as it used to take because I’m no longer concerned with search engine optimization and advertising.

It may appear that I actually am being prolific at the beginning, but I’m just rewriting and republishing what I’ve previously published elsewhere.
